Part 2 continues the series of posts taken from my interview by a PR student working on a course paper.
Question:
What made you want to work in the public relations field?
Answer:
When I was in high school, I was fortunate to have an excellent guidance counselor. She knew I was going to college – because my parents made it clear that not going to college was not an option for me – and encouraged me to explore what I wanted to do. My guidance counselor, Mrs. Pendleton, asked me what I liked to do, and I told her that I enjoyed reading, writing and public speaking. She then introduced me to the mass communications profession and told me that Virginia Commonwealth University had one of the best mass communications programs in the country.
I applied to VCU and was accepted. My freshman year began in 1988. My experience at VCU was extraordinary. I loved every minute of it. When I graduated in May 1992, I was incredibly prepared for the real world and had a full-time job by September 1992. I love the PR profession and have never regretted my decision to pursue it. The profession is a great fit for my talents and allows me to do a lot of different things for a lot of different organizations and industries.
